Proof of the Existence of the Lord

Seest thou not that the Lord merges Night into Day and He merges Day into Night; that He has subjected the sun and the moon (to His Law) each running its course for a term appointed; and that the Lord is well acquainted with all that ye do? (Qur'an 31:29)

The believer finds proof of the existence of the Lord in all places. From the simple efficiency of a one-celled organism to the great complexity of his own body; he sees in all, the work of the Lord.  To deny the Lord’s existence in the face of such perfection and unity of purpose would be monstrously ungrateful.

An often-quoted parable is that of a man traveling through a barren desert.  He comes upon a watch lying atop the sand.  Marveling at the intricate mechanism with its many moving parts and precise engineering, would he not be a fool to conclude that the watch came in to being without a maker?  Yet much of humankind is all too ready to deny the Maker of the universe and all that is within.

Creation implies a Creator.  Scientists can take us to the very instant of the Big Bang and posit it as the beginning of the universe, but they never go beyond that point and ask the question of who caused the Big Bang.  They conclude correctly that they do not know the cause but they think that this inability means that one does not exist.

The believer, in contrast, relies on his humble certainty that, though the Creator is Infinite and His Essence is Unknowable, still in His Mercy He has provided humankind with the means to acknowledge Him.  The Lord provides him with the description and the vocabulary with His revealed word:

He is the Lord, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms.  To Him belong the Best Names.  All that are in the heavens and the earth glorify Him and He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise(59:24)

Different aspects of creation are described, from the steady placement of the majestic mountains to the conception of a human being originating as a microscopic dot:

And He has affixed into the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you, and rivers and roads, that you may guide yourselves.(16:15)

Then We made the fluid into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a lump; then We made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then We developed out of it another creature: so blessed be the Lord the Best to create!(23:14)

These verses and others show that not only did the Lord create the universe and all it contains, but that He sustains it from one moment to the next.  Were it not for His constant attention, the creation would collapse and we would cease to be in one instant.  Is this not reason enough to be grateful to the Lord?

Humankind is created with a natural inclination to believe in the Lord, but this belief is often obscured by false teachings and the mundane pursuits of a worldly life.  It is necessary to strip away the layers of ignorance, misguidance and apathy in order to return to conscious knowledge of this inclination to the truth.  Only then will a person be free to hear and understand the message that the Lord exists and the Lord is One.
