Water Gushing From His Fingers

The noble Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the last of Prophets sent by God to mankind. And as a norm of Allah in affirming to the followers of His Prophets or proving to the non believing party that he was actually a true Prophet sent by Him, He gave them powers to perform certain miracles according to circumstances and by His Will and Permission. As such, the Prophets of Allah displayed miracles in their life time.

One of such miracles, out of so many, was that which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed, in which water gushed from his fingers and more than a thousand people, his companions, that were with him drank to their fill and performed ablution too. This happened in many occasions as narrated by more than one companion. Below are some of these narrations:

Narrated Salim bin Abi Aj-Jad: Jabir bin 'Abdullah said: "The people became very thirsty on the day of Al-Hudaibiya (Treaty). A small pot containing some water was in front of the Prophet and when he had finished the ablution, the people rushed towards him. He asked, 'What is wrong with you?' They replied, 'We have no water either for performing ablution or for drinking except what is present in front of you.' So he placed his hand in that pot and the water started flowing among his fingers like springs. We all drank and performed ablution (from it)." I asked Jabir, "How many were you?" he replied, "Even if we had been one-hundred-thousand, it would have been sufficient for us, but we were fifteen-hundred." [Bukhari]

Narrated 'Abdullah:  We used to consider miracles as Allah's Blessings, but you people consider them to be a warning. Once we were with Allah's Apostle on a journey, and we ran short of water. He said, "Bring the water remaining with you." The people brought a utensil containing a little water. He placed his hand in it and said, "Come to the blessed water, and the Blessing is from Allah." I saw the water flowing from among the fingers of Allah's Apostle , and no doubt, we heard the meal glorifying Allah, when it was being eaten (by him). [Bukhari]

Anas bin Malik reported that Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) and his Companions were at a place known as az-Zaura' (az-Zaurd' is a place in the bazar of Medina near the mosque) that he called for a vessel containing water. He put his hand in that. And there began to spout (water) between his fingers and all the Companions performed ablution. Qatada, one of the narrators in the chain of narrators, said: Abu Hamza (the kunya of Anas bin Malik), how many people were they? He said: They were about three hundred. [Muslim]

Mu'adh bin Jabal reported that he went along with Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) in the expedition of Tabuk and he (the Holy Prophet) combined the prayers. He offered the noon and afternoon prayers together and the sunset and night prayers together and on the other day he deferred the prayers; he then came out and offered the noon and afternoon prayers together. He then went in and (later on) came out and then after that offered the sunset and night prayers together and then said: "God willing, you would reach by tomorrow the fountain of Tabuk and you should not come to that until it is dawn, and he who amongst you happens to go there should not touch its water until I come." We came to that and two persons (amongst) us reached that fountain ahead of us. It was a thin flow of water like the shoelace. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) asked them whether they had touched the water. They said: Yes. Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) scolded them, and he said to them what he had to say by the will of God. The people then took water of the fountain in their palms until it became somewhat significant and Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) washed his hands and his face too in it, and then, took it again in that (fountain) and there gushed forth abundant water from that fountain, until all the people drank to their fill. He then said: "Mu'adh, it is hoped that if you live long you would see its water irrigating well the gardens." [Muslim]

These are few of the many narrations in which the noble Prophet (peace be upon him) was narrated to have performed the miracle of water springing out from within his fingers. It is in fact, a great sign worth noting. Our Prophet (peace be upon him) performed so many different miracles at different occasions. May Allah make easy for you and all of us the comprehension of the impact of such miracles and making it a source of increment in our faith in Him.
