The Crying Tree Trunk

Among the miracles of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the crying tree trunk. This occurred when he (peace be upon him) moved to the newly made pulpit to deliver his sermon, while he was formerly leaning on the tree trunk for his sermons. At the incident the tree trunk cried out loud like a child for it would no longer be in the company of the Prophet and hear the remembrance of Allah.

Nonetheless, the prophet (peace be upon him) also made clear that another reason that made the trunk weep was because it will miss the remembrance of Allah which it used to hear. He (peace be upon him) said: “It wept because of the remembrance of Allah (Dhikr) which it used to hear.” [1]

This hadith was narrated by in so many different books. In the following two narration it says:

As narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah, "The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to stand by a stem of date palm tree (while delivering the Khutba) when the pulpit was placed for him we heard that stem crying like a pregnant she camel till the Prophet (peace be upon him) got down from the pulpit and placed his hand over it.

The Hadeeth of Sahl bin Sa’d regarding the pulpit. Sahl mentioned that the Prophet (peace be upon him) offered Salaat (prayer) on it, and then stepped back and added in this quotation “After finishing the Salaat he (peace be upon him) faced the people and said, I have done this so that you may follow me and learn the way I offer Salaat.”

This incident that happened during the life time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions teaches us three important lessons.

1- Even the inanimate glorify and worship Allah. He says: {The seven heavens and the earth and all that is within glorify Him and there is not a thing but glorifies His Praise. But you understand not their glorification.} [al-Isra': 44]

It was like a surprise to the companions of the prophet (peace be upon him). The might have thought it was a human weeping. But the voice was loud enough to avert all kinds of doubts. At this point of conviction, they fell silent in surprise and stopped speaking and all movement ceased. It was like, was that voice actually proceeding from the dry tree trunk in front of them? Its voice was louder than thoughts and could not be dismissed as mere fancy.

If it had replied, it would have said: "Do you think that you are the only ones who love Muhammad (peace be upon him)?" Or something like: "If you knew what the remembrance of Allah was, you would not allow it part with  you for the least moment?" or the like.

2- It was a miracle for the Prophet (peace be upon him). If not, how would a dry piece of tree cry out? And after the cry, the Prophet (peace be upon him) had to show more of his miraculous dispositions by placing on it his hand till it kept silent and then the discussion that followed between him and his companions.

3- A very clear call for everyone to recall his or her self before becoming a dead piece of inanimate body that will never be given such an opportunity to glorify Allah thereafter. It is a great lesson for you and everyone of us to learn from. If the dead were allowed to speak and give a bit of what they must have seen of the reality which we the living have our eyes veiled from, I think they would have done and performed much more wonders than this tree trunk. This is why Allah has called upon man to remember Him so much.

Allah, the Most Glorified says: {Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying), I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favors on you) and never be ungrateful to Me} [al-Baqarah: 152]

It is through the remembrance of Allah the hearts live. According to Ibn Taimiyyah: Remembrance of Allah for the heart is like water to the fish; and what would the situation of the fish be if it left the water?

It might appear that the weeping of an inanimate object is something strange, but it was a subjugation from Allah in order that the tree trunk should deliver a Message not only for the Companions rather, it was for all mankind, in every time and place.

The tree trunk addressed mankind, with a message of complete faith, in that language which purifies the hearts and washes the senses and when humanity understands it, its soul which is wandering in the wilderness will return to it.

Why not make your tongue always busy with the glorificatipon of the name of Allah, the Most High? Why not give yourself the best of life and inject into your spirit that self tranquility from the Creator Himself? It is high time we rethink and make our souls filled with the remembrance of Allah before we may be no more capable of doing so.
