Prayer Time

Most Muslim scholars define the companions (sahaba) of Prophet Muhammad-peace be upon him- to be the people who lived during his time, saw or heard him speak, even for a brief moment, believed in him and died as Muslims.
To embrace Islam in those days meant to invite trouble and misery to oneself. Despite this, the companions of the Prophet accepted Islam without any fear of trouble and atrocities. No one could succeed in attaining such sublime state in Faith and Knowledge as these few fortunate ones. By enduring all sorts of humiliation and unbearable atrocities in the way and love for the Divine Message and devotion to Righteous path, they sent examples which will serve as a beacon light for the seekers of Truth and Righteousness.

The Qur’an describes the Companions, their steadfastness, sacrifice and reward in many verses. Below are some of these verses:

Allah says:ﭑ ﭒ ﭓﭕ ﭖ ﭗ ﭘ ﭙ ﭚ ﭛﭝ ﭞ ﭟ ﭠ ﭡ ﭢ ﭣ ﭤﭦ ﭧ ﭨ ﭩ ﭪ ﭫﭭ ﭮ ﭯﭰﭲ ﭳ ﭴ ﭵﭶ ﭷ ﭸ ﭹ ﭺ ﭻ ﭼ ﭽ ﭾ ﭿ ﮀ ﮁﮃ ﮄ ﮅ ﮆ ﮇ ﮈ ﮉ ﮊ ﮋ ﮌ ﮍ

Meaning: “Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who are with him are hard against the unbelievers [they are implacable before them], merciful one to another. [They kept so long vigils that] you see them bowing, prostrating, seeking blessing, bounty (of forgiveness and Paradise) and good pleasure (of Allah). Their mark is on their faces, the trace of prostration. That is their likeness in the Torah, and their likeness in the Gospel: as a seed that puts forth its shoot, and strengthens it, and it grows strong and rises straight upon its stalk, pleasing the sowers, that through them it may enrage the unbelievers. Allah has promised those of them who believe and do deeds of righteousness forgiveness and a mighty wage [He will reward them in Paradise with things that neither eyes will ever have seen nor ears heard]. (Q48:V29)

The Qur’an again, describes them:

 ﭑﭒ ﭓ ﭔ ﭕ ﭖ ﭗ ﭘ ﭙ ﭚ ﭛ ﭜ ﭝ ﭞﭟ ﭠ ﭡ ﭢ ﭣ ﭤ ﭥ ﭦﭨ ﭩ ﭪ ﭫ

Meaning: “And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct - Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment”. (Q9:V100)

Again, we read in the Qur’an concerning the Companions:

 ﮏ ﮐ ﮑ ﮒ ﮓﮔﮕ ﮖ ﮗ ﮘﮙ ﮚ ﮛﮜ ﮝ ﮞ ﮟ ﮠ ﮡﮢ

Meaning: “Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest. (Q48:V18)

The Companions swore many oaths of allegiance to Allah’s Messenger that they would do their utmost to protect him and carry, by Allah’s Will, Islam to ultimate victory. They kept their promise at the cost of all their belongings and lives. Most of them were martyred in the battles either during the life of the Prophet himself or in conveying Islam as far as possible during the reigns of succeeding Caliphs. It is still possible to find in almost every part of the Muslim lands tombs where several Companions were buried. Also, they brought up numerous scholars in the fields of religious knowledge - jurisprudence, Prophetic Tradition, Qur’-anic interpretation, and also in social sciences like history and the biography of the Prophet- peace be upon him. In the words of the Qur’an:

 ﭑ ﭒ ﭓ ﭔ ﭕ ﭖ ﭗ ﭘﭚ ﭛﭜ ﭝ ﭞ ﭟ ﭠﭢ ﭣ ﭤ

Meaning: “Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration.” (Q33:V23)
