Do They Not Ponder the Qur'an? -14

It is desirable to weep during recitation and the way to doing that is by inviting sadness to the heart which consequently develops into weeping. That is by contemplating over what the verses embody regarding threat and intimidation, covenants and pledges, and then think over one's nonfeasance with respect to its instructions and deterrents. By so doing he will indisputably feel sad and begin to weep. Though if he could not invite sadness and weeping then he should weep over his loss of the ability to show anguish and weeping for that is the greatest of all calamities.

Abu Haamid Al-Ghazaaly

Ihyaau 'Ulumid-Deen, vol.2, pp. 37.
