All praises be to Allah Who has sent the Qur’an and made the book of guidance and a solution to all man’s problems. May Allah’s peace, salutations and benedictions be upon the beloved Prophet of Islam; who never left this world until he has explained to man all secrets of nature and provided knowledge of everything. May Allah be please with him, his pure family and lofty companions.

Islam came to meet the needs of people in all aspects of their lives ranging from personal hygiene, marital life, economic and financial transactions, and treatment of ailments and so on. It is this multi-facet nature of Islam that qualifies it to be a universal and comprehensive religion applicable at all times, all places and to all people. The root of the Islamic message is the glorious Qur’an which is Allah’s words in entirety, representing Allah’s final testament to humanity and the living miracle of the final Prophet and Messenger of Allah; Prophet Muhammad(may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

The Qur’an and Medicine:

The healing nature of the Qur’an is one signs of its divine nature and a miracle of its truthful message. Its healing component is incomparable as it is the diagnosis of the All-Kwowing and the All-Seer(Allah). It is a miracle that Allah revealed to His prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and it is a blessing for humanity. The Quran is not only a book of guidance for mankind but Allah has also made it a spiritual cure and healing for all types of ailments. This includes treatment of all worldly problems, physical and psychological ailments, and spiritual (evil eye, sihr, and so on.) The Creator has clearly told us that the words of the Quran are a “shifa” (healing) for all and, therefore, when used with real belief in one’s heart, this form of treatment can bring miraculous cure to all forms of ailments. It generally provides cure to all sickness be they spiritual, psychological or physical diseases. Allah says:

We send down in the Quran healing and mercy for the believers, but it increases the wrongdoers only in loss.”{Al-Israa: 82}

Besides this, it particularly pointed out certain ways and methodologies of treatments. Allaah mentions honey in the Qur’aan and says that it is a healing for mankind. And He mentions the principle of preserving good health and guarding against sickness. Allah says:

{ And your Lord inspired the bee: "Set up hives in the mountains, and in the trees, and in what they construct." Then eat of all the fruits, and go along the pathways of your Lord, with precision. From their bellies emerges a fluid of diverse colors, containing healing for the people. Surely in this is a sign for people who reflect.} (An-Nahl: 68-69)

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

With regard to the Prophet’s guidance concerning drinking, it is the most perfect guidance that maintains good health. He used to drink honey mixed with cold water. This is very healthy and no one can understand how healthy it is except the most prominent doctors. For drinking honey on an empty stomach dissolves phlegm, cleanses the stomach, reduces its viscosity, washes away waste matter, warms it up a little and opens its inlet and exit. It has a similar effect on the liver, kidneys and urethra. It is more beneficial to the stomach than any other kind of sweet that enters it. However it may cause side effects in people who are suffering from jaundice because it is hot and jaundice is hot, so it may aggravate it; in order to avoid this effect vinegar may be added, then honey will become beneficial and drinking it will be more useful than many or most of the drinks that are made from sugar, especially for those who are not used to these drinks, for if they drink them they will not suit them as well as honey does, or even come close.

With regard to drinking it when it is collected and well-prepared, this is one of the most beneficial things for the body, and one of the greatest means of preserving health; it is very refreshing and energizing, and it is good for the liver and heart. If it is well-prepared it provides nutrition and makes food reach all parts of the body in the most effective manner. {(Zaad al-Ma’aad, 4/224, 225)}

In three places in the Qur’an, the three basic principles of medicine are mentioned to be prevention, maintaining good health and removing harmful substances from the body.

1-the Qur’an prevented the sick person from using water if it will lead to worsening his condition. In case of observing cleanliness (ablution and spiritual bath after sexual intercourse) for salaat, it complements that with using the sand (Tayammum). The Qur’an says:

“If you are sick, or traveling, or one of you comes from the toilet, or you have had intercourse with women, and cannot find water, find clean sand and wipe your faces and your hands with it. God is Pardoning and Forgiving.”(An-Nisaa: 43). Allaah allowed the sick person to do tayammum to protect him, just as He permitted it to the one who has no water

2-Allaah says concerning the maintenance of good health:

“But whoever is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days”(Al-Baqara: 185) The traveller is allowed to break his fast during Ramadaan, to protect his health lest the combination of fasting and the difficulties of travel weakens him and affects his health.

3- the Qur’an forbids the consumption of all harmful substances such as alcohol and all intoxicants, pork, dead animals and many others which is a very important principle in medicine. The Qur’an declared:

Prohibited for you are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and animals dedicated to other than God; also the flesh of animals strangled, killed violently, killed by a fall, gored to death, mangled by wild animals-except what you rescue, and animals sacrificed on altars…”(Al-Maa’ida: 3)

The Qur’an permitted the consumption of all lawful things which are very healthful to the body such as fruits of all kinds, vegetables and all pure food stuffs. Even in marital conjugal relations, it guides to the right approach to one’s spouse and forbids approaching the wife from the anus and approaching her during her menstrual cycles. These are all great medicinal guidelines which cannot be denied. Praise be to Allah who has guided His slaves in His glorious Book to such great principles of medicine even before they were discovered by modern scientist after rigorous scientific researches.
