Praises and thanks belong to Allah; Who sent Prophets and Messengers with the perfect guidance and laws. May His special salutations and blessings be upon the leader of the Prophets and last of the Messengers who was sent with the final Message for the complete guidance of humanity; the holy Prophet Muhammad, his family and all companions.

Different Prophets and Messengers were sent to this world at different times, different places and to different communities, (may Allah’s peace be upon all of them). The dispatch of these Messengers was to bring mankind back to monotheism and to dissuade them from the falsehood of polytheism. The first among these Messengers was Prophet Nuh(upon him be Allah’s peace) who was sent to the first generation of humans who deviated from the Monotheistic faith their ancestors were upon. Prior to the coming of Prophet Nuh(peace be upon him) people were upon pure Islamic monotheism; worshipping Allah without ascribing partners to Him. This state continue for centuries and generations upon generations passed upon this until idol worship was invented resulting out of al-ghuluww (extremism) in some righteous individuals. Allah said concerning this:

{Humanity used to be one community; then God sent the prophets, bringing good news and giving warnings. And He sent down with them the Scripture, with the truth, to judge between people regarding their differences..}(Al-Baqara:213)

Prophet Nuh(peace be upon him) was sent to return these people to the truth and to warn them of the falsehood of idol worship. Almost all people of the community disbelieved in his message unless a few people numbering from 80-90 as mentioned by some historians. Among those who were not upon the path of Nuh(peace be upon him) was his own son.

Prophet Nuh(peace be upon him) and his son

Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) after so many years of calling his people to the truth, found in them stubbornness  and heedlessness to his call. He was devastated and hence, implored the help of his Lord. He supplicated to Allah; The Most High to destroy all the disbelieving people to prevent them from luring the few believers back to idol worship. Allah sent a heavy rain which gushed forth both from the sky and the earth and a heavy flood overtook the unbelievers and destroyed everything except the few believers and some other species of animals who were carried on a boat made by Noah on Allah's command. Nuh (peace be upon him) whilst in the boat of safety, saw his son swimming to tunes of the heavy waves of the flood. Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) unaware of his son’s disbelief called out to him to embark the boat. The following conversation took place between Prophet Nuh(peace be upon him) and his son as revealed in the Glorious Qur’an:

{And so it(the boat) sailed with them amidst waves like hills. And Noah called to his son, who had kept away, "O my son! Embark with us, and do not be with the disbelievers." He said, "I will take refuge on a mountain-it will protect me from the water." He said, "There is no protection from God's decree today, except for him on whom He has mercy." And the waves surged between them, and he was among the drowned.}(Hud: 42-43).

When the wicked people of Prophet Nuh were destroyed by the flood, Allah ordered the earth to swallow its water and the heaven cleared up, the boat was made to settle on mount Judi. Prophet Nuh(peace be upon him) humbly presented the case of his son to his Lord as he was unaware of his son secret disbelieve and unrighteous deeds, he said:

{…"O My Lord, my son is of my family, and Your promise is true, and You are the Wisest of the wise."}{Hud:45).

Allah the Most High said in reply to Nuh’s plea:

{...O Noah, he is not of your family. It is an unrighteous deed. So do not ask Me about something you know nothing about. I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorant."} (Hud: 46). In the commentary of Ibn Katheer on this verse, he narrated on the authority of`Abdur-Razzaq that Ibn `Abbas said, "He was the son of Nuh, but he opposed him in deeds and intention.'' `Ikrimah said in some of the modes of recitation it said here, (إِنَّهُ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا غَيْرَ صَالِحٍ) "Verily, he (Nuh's son) worked deeds that were not righteous.''

Prophet Nuh immediately repented to Allah after knowing that his son was of the disbelieving folk, he implore his LORD’s forgiveness:

{"O My Lord, I seek refuge with You, from asking You about what I have no knowledge of. Unless You forgive me, and have mercy on me, I will be one of the losers."} [Hud:47].

This ended the story of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) and his son who disbelieved in what his father was sent to propagate. His biological relation with his father could not spare him of Allah’s punishment. The parameter of salvation in Islam is not mere familial relation to a prophet or a pious person, but ones faith in Allah and righteous deeds done only for the sake of Allah and upon the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad(may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
