Verses Revealed During Travel and Those Revealed at Home

The study of the Glorious Qur’an and it’s sciences is regarded as one of the best and most lofty occupation one can ever engaged in. the Qur’an is entirely the word of the Majestic Lord, the Creator of the Heavens and earth, which was revealed in the perspicuous Arabic language to the holy Prophet Muhammad (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) through the arc-angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years.

Knowledge of the times, places and causes of the revelation of verses of this Noble Book (QUR”AN) has afterwards become very important sciences which are very necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the Qur’an. Many terms were propounded by scholars in reference to the times, places and causes of revelation and among such terminologies are: travel-related verses (سفري) and home- related verses).(حضري. These two terms are used in reference to the particular time period a particular verse was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as shall be seen below in details.

Home-Related verses

These are those verses that were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) whilst he is not on a journey. The revelation of many verses of the Qur’an is of this type, whether when he was in Makkah or Madina. With the exception of the few verses whose revelation occurred during the travelling times of Prophet Muhammad, all verses of the glorious Qur’an falls under this category.

Travel –Related verses

Travel-related verses are those whose revelation occurred when the holy Prophet (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him was on a journey. These verses are only a handful and countable. The following are a few examples:

1-Qur’an chapter 48 (victory) Al-fat’hi} was revealed at Hudaibiya between Makkaا and Madinaا during the treaty between the holy Prophet Muhammad (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the Quraish

2-verse no.3. of the chapter of Al-Ma’ida was also revealed in a journey on the Day of Arafaat. Allah says:

ٱلْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلْإِسْلَٰمَ دِينًا ۚ

“…Today I have perfected your religion for you, and have completed My favor upon you, and have approved Islam as a religion for you…”}

3-the verses of Tayammum was revealed in the expedition of Bani Mustalaq as mentioned in at-Tamheed by Ibn Abdul –Barr. Allah says:

وَإِن كُنتُم مَّرْضَىٰٓ أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ أَوْ جَآءَ أَحَدٌ مِّنكُم مِّنَ ٱلْغَآئِطِ أَوْ لَٰمَسْتُمُ ٱلنِّسَآءَ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا۟ مَآءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا۟ صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَٱمْسَحُوا۟ بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُم مِّنْهُ ۚ مَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيَجْعَلَ عَلَيْكُم مِّنْ حَرَجٍ وَلَٰكِن يُرِيدُ لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ وَلِيُتِمَّ نِعْمَتَهُۥ عَلَيْكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

If you are ill, or travelling, or one of you returns from the toilet, or you had contact with women, and could not find water, then use some clean sand and wipe your faces and hands with it. God does not intend to burden you, but He intends to purify you, and to complete His blessing upon you, that you may be thankful.( Al-Maa’ida : 6}

4- The following was also revealed in a journey:

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ

{And guard yourselves against a Day when you will be returned to God; then each soul will be rewarded fully for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.} Baqara :281]. In ad-Dalaa’il, Imam Baihaqi mentioned that the above verse was revealed when the holy Prophet Muhammad was at Mina.

5- Allah says:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تُؤَدُّوا۟ ٱلْأَمَٰنَٰتِ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمْتُم بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ أَن تَحْكُمُوا۟ بِٱلْعَدْلِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ نِعِمَّا يَعِظُكُم بِهِۦٓ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ سَمِيعًۢا بَصِيرًا

God instructs you to give back things entrusted to you to their owners. And when you judge between people, judge with justice. God's instructions to you are excellent. God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.”{ An-Nisaa’: 58}. This verse was revealed when the Prophet Muhammad was in Makkah in the farewell Hajj. Its revelation was on the issue of the custodians of the key to the sacred Ka’aba.

6-Allah says:

لوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُ ۚ وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَٰذِبُونَ

{Had the gain been immediate, and the journey shorter, they would have followed you; but the distance seemed too long for them. Still they swear by God: "Had we been able, we would have marched out with you." They damn their own souls, and God knows that they are lying.} Tauba: 42). This verse was revealed in the Taabuk Expedition as was reported by Tirmidhi on the authority of Umar (may Allah be please with him).
