All praise is due and belongs to Allah alone. May His peace and blessings be upon the noble Prophet.
Jamilah Bint Thabit ibn Abi al-Aflah. Al-Shamus bint Abi Amir, who were both from the 'Amr ibn Awf clan of the Aws tribe in Almadinah. She was the sister of Aasim, wife of Umar ibn al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with her). She was also called Umm 'Asim and was one of Medina's first reverts to Islam.
Her name used to be 'Assiyah (meaning "intractable") but the Prophet changed it to Jamilah (meaning "beautiful"). After she embraced Islam, she went to 'Umar and said, "I hate my name, give me a name." He said, "You are beautiful (Jamilah)." She got angry and kept going through names and could not find any but her mother's name. So she went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said O Messenger of Allah, I hate my name. He said, "You are beautiful (Jamilah)." She got angry again, and said "That's what 'Umar said!" The Prophet said, "Don't you know that Allah is on Umar's tongue and [in his] heart?"
She married Umar ibn al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) in the year 7 A.H. They had one son, Aasim before their marriage ended in divorce. After they were divorced, 'Aasim who was a child, lived with his mother. One day 'Umar saw his son playing and wanted to take him but Jamilah did not want to give the young child to 'Umar. She took the case to Abu Bakr, who was the Caliph at this time. He ruled in Jamilah's favor and 'Umar had to return the child to his mother.
She later married Yazid bin Harithah, with whom she had a son, Abdurrahman. Ibn sa'd said She and her mother were among the first ten women to pledge allegiance to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
May Almighty Allah be pleased with her.
