The holy Qur’an is a divine book which serves as the source of all sciences of human endeavors; like an ocean from which endless valleys flow, and like a spring that flows from an endless fountain, the knowledge derived from the Glorious Qur’an never ends. Humanity will continue to remain indebted from the divine indications to important scientific issues, historic and archaeological information’s mentioned in the Qur’an.

From among such sciences of the Qur’an is the historic accounts presented in it and those figures and characters behind these historic occurrences. Names of these people are mentioned with accurate accounts of their performances whether good or bad. In this brief but concise article, a presentation of the various names of people mentioned in the Qur’an shall be made by classifying them into the appropriate categories as suited their positions.

Names of the Prophets (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon them and upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad):

The number of Prophets and Messengers mentioned in the Qur’an are 25. The names of eighteen (18) of them are mentioned at one place in the Qur’an; in the chapter of An-aam, in the words of the Most High:

That was Our argument which We gave to Abraham (Ibraahim) against his people. We elevate by degrees whomever We will. Your Lord is Wise and Informed. And We gave him Isaac (Ishaaq) and Jacob (Ya’qub)-each of them We guided. And We guided Noah (Nuh)previously; and from his descendants David (Daawud), and Solomon(Sulaiman), and Job(Ayyub), and Joseph (Yusuf), and Moses( Musa), and Aaron (Haarun). Thus We reward the righteous. And Zechariah (Zakariyya) , and John (Yahya), and Jesus (Easah), and Elias-every one of them was of the upright. And Ishmael (ISmaaeel), and Elijah (Al-Yasa’), and Jonah (Yunus) , and Lot (Lut)-We favored each one of them over all other people.” (An’aam: 83-86)

Thus , the names are:

1- Abraham (Ibraahim 2- Isaac (Ishaaq) 3- Jacob (Ya’qub) 4- Noah (Nuh) 5- David (Daawud) 6- Solomon(Sulaiman), 7- Job(Ayyub), 8- Joseph (Yusuf), 9- Moses( Musa), 10- Aaron (Haarun). 11- Zechariah (Zakariyya) 12- John (Yahya), 13- Jesus (Easah), 14- Elias 15- Ishmael (ISmaaeel), 16- Elijah (Al-Yasa’), 17- Jonah (Yunus) 18- Lot (Lut). The remaining seven (7) are mentioned in different other places of the Qur’an, and they are:

19-Idrees  20-Hud 21-Shuaib 22-Swalih 23-Dhul-kifl 24- Aadam and the final Prophet, the leader of the Messengers 25- Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon them). The holy Qur’an is a book of guidance, a book that cure the disease of the heart and minds, expelling from them ignorance and misguidance. It is not merely a book of the sciences mentioned in the introduction of this article, but as a book that expels ignorance, guides humans, it must be an embodiment of everything that suits human’s spiritual, intellectual and material transformation.
