The Firewood of the Hell in light of the Qur'an and Hadith

Islam teaches that Hell is a real place prepared by God for those who do not believe in Him, rebel against His laws, and reject His messengers.  Hell is an actual place, not a mere state of mind or a spiritual entity.  The horrors, pain, anguish, and punishment are all real, but different in nature than their earthly counterparts.  Hell is the ultimate humiliation and loss, and nothing is worse than it.

As for the fuel component of Hell, it is a composition of stones and disbelieving and sinful individuals. There are sufficient proofs from the Glorious Qur’an and the Noble Sunnah indicating this fact. In the holy Qur’an Allah; The Most great and Merciful declared:

O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire, whose fuel is people and stones…” (At-Tahreem:66)

Again, Allah says in Qur’an chapter 2, verse 24:

“…then beware the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers…”(Al-Baqara:24)

Another source of fuel for Hell will be the pagan gods that were worshipped besides God:

“You and what you worship besides God are fuel for Hell. You will descend into it. Had these been gods, they would not have descended into it. All will abide in it. In it they will wail. In it they will not hear.(Al-Biyaa’:98-100)

The Qur’an also mentioned, the disbelievers among the jinn shall be firewood for Hell. That pronouncement came as an account of a group of jinn who listen to the Qur’an and then embrace islam at the time of the Holy Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

Among us are those who are submitting, and among us are the compromisers. As for those who have submitted-it is they who pursue rectitude. But as for the compromisers-they will be firewood for Hell.'"(Al-Jinn:14-15)

In the hadith, women who are ungrateful to their husbands and easily pronounces curse, and complain much were also depicted as fuel for hellfire. It was narrated that Jabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I attended Eid prayers with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He started with the prayer before the khutbah (sermon), with no adhan (call to prayer) or iqamah (final call to prayer). Then he stood up, leaning on Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), speaking of fear of Allah (taqwa) and urging us to obey Him. He preached to the people and reminded them. Then he went over to the women and preached to them and reminded them. Then he said, ‘Give in charity, for you are the majority of the fuel of Hell. A woman with dark cheeks stood up in the midst of the women and said, ‘Why is that, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘Because you complain too much and are ungrateful to your husbands.’ Then they started to give their jewellery in charity, throwing their earrings and rings into Bilal’s cloak.”(Muslim).

Thus according to this hadith, the characteristics of such women as mentioned in the hadith are:

1- Ungratefulness to their companions (husbands)

2- ungrateful for good treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime then she sees one (undesirable) thing in you, she will say, 'I have never had anything good from you.'"

May Allah save us from Hellfire, and may His peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad, his family and all companions.
