All praises and glorifications are due and belongs to Allah; the Sole Creator of the Universe and everything that exist. May Allah’s peace and salutations be upon the final Prophet Muhammad, his family and all companions.
God did not create the heavens and the earth, and everything that they both withhold for play and jest. Everything He created is subjected to certain unique laws and systems, which ensure the smooth functioning of this universe. These are referred to as the “laws of God”. He says in the Qur’an:
إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ
“Everything We created is precisely measured.”(Al-Qamar:49)
The concept of justice is one of divine laws of God, which keeps the universe and its occupants in a balanced living. Injustice leads to chaos and confusion ultimately leading to the corruption of human living.
In scriptural terms, justice is the unchanging law that brings consequences for actions. Because of the law of justice, we receive blessings when we obey God's commandments. The law of justice also demands that a penalty be paid for every sin we commit. This law remains same both in Christianity and in Islam and forms the theme of the concept of reward for good and bad deeds. The individual responsibility to this law is to hold oneself accountable before it, ensuring that one maintains justice in all dealings without favoritism. In the New International version of the Bible, it is mentioned in the Book of Romans:
“For God does not show favoritism. All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law and the law will judge all who sin under the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous” (Romans 2:11-13, NIV).
In the Glorious Qur’an; the final unadulterated word of God, the same theme of indiscriminative justice is repeated in many verses. One of them reads as follows:
وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ مَالَ ٱلْيَتِيمِ إِلَّا بِٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ حَتَّىٰ يَبْلُغَ أَشُدَّهُۥ ۖ وَأَوْفُوا۟ ٱلْكَيْلَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۖ لَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۖ وَإِذَا قُلْتُمْ فَٱعْدِلُوا۟ وَلَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبَىٰ ۖ وَبِعَهْدِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْفُوا۟ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ وَصَّىٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ
“And do not come near the property of the orphan، except with the best intentions، until he reaches maturity. And give full weight and full measure, equitably. We do not burden any soul beyond its capacity. And when you speak, be fair, even if it concerns a close relative. And fulfill your covenant with God. All this He has enjoined upon you, so that you may take heed”(An-Aam:152)
Another responsibility of people towards God’s laws is total submission to them (these laws) with the believe that they contain such wisdoms that are capable of reforming ones’ live even if they are not apparently visible to man. In Isaiah 28:17, it is mentioned:
God's justice is such that it is not fit for any man or angel to expostulate with him, or demand a reason for His actions. God has not only authority on His side, but equity. He lays judgment to the line, and righteousness to the plummet.'(Isa 28:17.)
The Qur’an declared:
أَفَحُكْمَ ٱلْجَٰهِلِيَّةِ يَبْغُونَ ۚ وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ حُكْمًا لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ
“Is it the laws of the time of ignorance that they desire? Who is better than God in judgment is for people who are certain? (Al-Maa’ida:50)
People with certain faith in God do not turn away from His laws and do not give preference over them.
