All praises and thanks are due and belong to Allah who taught the Qur’an , created man and taught him clear expression. May Allah’s peace and salutations be upon the final messenger through whom the final testament of Allah was conveyed to humankind to abide with them forever. May Allah’s blessings and benedictions be upon him, his family and all companions.

The Sciences of the Quran’, deals with the knowledge of those sciences that have a direct bearing on the recitation, history, understanding and implementation of the Qur’an. It is, therefore, a vast field of Islamic scholarship, and one that is of primary importance.

Generally, the virtues of the glorious Qur’an cannot be over emphasized and any attempt to enumerate its lofty status and excellence will fall short of what it really deserves. Why not, whilst it is the last of the divine books of Allah Almighty and the only divinely revealed book that was guaranteed protection from distortions and alterations, which the previously revealed books such as the Gospel and the Bible suffered. It was protected from the alterations of the heretics, the false claims of liars, and the false interpretations of the ignorant. The Qur’an is the only scripture of its kind that remained intact in its pristine form and continues to be a challenging miracle in all ages and centuries. Sufficient for it as the most virtuous books that it is a representation of Allah’s attribute of speech and it is His words, and what can be more virtuous than the lofty words of Allah; the powerful Creator of the universe, the Subduer and Vanquisher?

As for what can be used to demonstrate its virtues, nothing can better do that than that which is great in itself. The Qur’an itself is the proof of its virtues due to its element of spiritual guidance, perfect historic accounts and accurate scientific declarations. No unprejudiced mind ever had a share of its wisdom without admiring its divine substance and origin. Allah says about it:

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

Alif, Lam, Meem. This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guide for the righteous.” (Al-Baqara:1-2)

The Magnificence, Grandeur, Superiority and virtuous of the Qur’an is seen in many noble traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The following are just an epitome of them:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said “The superiority of the speech of Allah compared to all other speech is like the superiority of Allah over His creation.” (Tirmidhee no. 2926 - [Hasan]

He, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon  him) also said, “Every Prophet was given miracles because of which people believed, but what I have been given is Divine Inspiration (the Qur’an) which Allah has revealed to me. So I hope that my followers will outnumber the followers of the other Prophets on the Day of Resurrection.”  (Bukhari and Muslim )

It is the criteria of one becoming the best of people. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it’ (Bukhari )

He also said: “Allah has His own people among mankind.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, who are they?” He said: “The people of the Qur’an, the people of Allah and those who are closest to Him'"(Ibn Majah –Hasan)

Recitation of the Qur’an and learning it brings enormous blessings. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “This Qur’an is the Banquet of Allah. Learn as much as you can from His banquet. This Qur’an is the Rope of Allah, and it is the clear Light and [the effective and beneficial] Healing. It is a protection for the one who clings to it and a rescue for the one who follows it. It is not crooked and so puts things straight. It does not deviate so as to be blamed. Its wonders do not cease. It does not wear out with much repetition. So recite it for Allah will reward you for the recitation of every letter....” [Also Abdullah ibn Masud said, ‘This Qur’an is the Banquet of Allah. Whoever enters it is safe.’]

It was also narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever recited the Qur’an, studied it, and acted according to what it contains; on the Day of Judgment his parents will be dressed with a crown of light, its brightness is like that of the sun. And his parents will be adorned with two bracelets, of which the whole world is not equivalent to them [in worth]. So they will say, ‘Why are we being adorned with these?’ It will be said, ‘This is because of your child taking [the recitation, teaching and acting upon] the Qur’an.”
