Praises and thanks are due and belong to Only Allah; the Lord and Creator of the Worlds, He taught with the pen and taught man what he knew not. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the unlettered Prophet who was the fountain head of knowledge, piety and moral behavior,; the holy Prophet Muhammad, his family and all companions.

Learning the Qur’an is one of the lofty objectives  in this life  and an adventure that elevates the status of its seeker to the pinnacle of success in this life and the hereafter if it is sought with the right etiquettes and aimed at pleasing the Creator; Almighty Allah. One who learns the Qur’an and reads it as it ought to be read, is raised to the ranks of the pure Angels in charge of revelation of divine scriptures. Great indeed is such reward and lofty indeed is such honor. They are the best of people as said by the Prophet Muhammad-peace be upon him-: “The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Al-Bukhari)

The learner of the Qur’an need to be characterized with certain etiquettes relating to himself and his teacher from whom he learns the Qur’an from. These etiquettes serve as milestones of success on his way of seeking the knowledge of this great book; which is the lofty words of Allah almighty.

Etiquettes of the Learner of the Qur'an in himself:

He should purify his intention before advancing towards learning of the Qur’an keeping in mind that he is one of the great acts of woirship; an act that makes him one of the best servants of Allah as the Prophet said: ““The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Al-Bukhari)

He should be in the state of purity anytime he wants to read it, as mentioned by Allah:

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ

فِى كِتَٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ

“It is a noble Quran. In a well-protected Book. None can grasp it except the purified.” (Al-Waqi’a:77-79)

Imam Tirmidhi said in his book: “ Nawaadir Al-Usul” “ from among the sanctity of the Noble Qur’an is that it should not be touched except by one in a state of purity”. This include purity of ones cloth and the place in which the learner sits to study the Qur’an.

Among the etiquettes of the learner of the Qur’an; which is also a highly praiseworthy deed, is that he cleans his mouth anything he wants to read the Qur’an.

It is also a recommended etiquette of the Qur’an that the reader or learner of the Qur’an halts from reciting it anytime he yawns. This is because yawning is caused by the devil, hence that act should not be missed with the lofty words of Allah, as doing so also leads to missing out some of the words of the Qur’an.

While in the state of spiritual impurity from sexual intercourse or wet dream , the learner of the Qur’an should not recite the Qur’an until he takes the spiritual bath. Menstruating and postnatal bleeding women should not also read the Qur’an by touching it directly with their hands, they can however read it from memory and possibly from modern technological gadgets as can be inferred from the sayings of some scholars.

One of the important spiritual etiquettes of the student of the glorious Qur’an is that, he cleans is heart from jealousy, hatred, backbiting, lying and envy. He should not envy or hate other students and should not cheat on them. he should be humble and respectful towards his colleagues.

Etiquettes of the learner of the Qur’an with his teacher:

Generally, the moral standards of learning demands that students give much sincere reverence to their teachers and uphold ideal behaviors with regards to them. if this is an undeniable fact with teachers who teaches sciences of material motives and objectives, what of the one who teaches the Noble words of Allah; the mother of all books authored by Allah as a representation of His attribute of  speech (the Qur’an is the word of Allah) and brought down by the trustworthy and strong Angel Gabriel-peace be upon him- to the best of mankind?

The learner of the Qur’an should wear the spiritual cloaks of humbleness and humility before his teacher. He should not raise his voice over his teacher’s and must give him an attentive ear when he is addressing him. The companions of the Prophet Muhammad –peace be upon him-anytime they sat before him they sit as if they are birds perching on their heads due to reverence to the Prophet Muhammad and respect for the knowledge they are learning from his holiness peace be upon him.

The learner of the Qur’an should always strive to precede his teacher to the circle of Qur’anic studies. If it is possible, he waits for his teacher at the door so as to walk with him into the study circle that is also a good etiquette.

Finally, a student of the Qur’an should fear Allah and knows that the Qur’an is the word of Allah, which is never given to any sinful fellow. He should Allah with regards to his teacher and colleagues and should be an embodiment of the teachings of the Qur’an as best as he can.
