Islamic Jurists' views regarding purification with Zamzam Water

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad , is His Slave and Messenger.

Zamzam is the name of a famous well in Masjid al-Harm in Akkah,which is thirty-eight cubits away from Ka'bah. It is the well of Ismaa'eel the son of Ibraaheem (peace and blessings of Allah be upon them both), from which Allah quenched the thirst of Ismaa'eel when he was an infant. His mother looked for water for him, but could not find any. She climbed to the to os As-Safaa' praying to Allah to help her and give her water for Ismaa'eel, then she climbed to the top of Al-Marwah and did the same. Allah sent Jibreel and he struck the earth with his heels, and water appeared.

According to the Hadith of Abu Dharr(may Allah be pleased with him), the prophet(peace be upon him) said concerning the water of Zamzam, " It is a blessing and it is food that satisfies." Reported by Muslim.

The fuqaha' agreed that it is permissible to use Zamam water to purify oneself, and for ablution and Ghusl for it was reported in Al-Musnad and was authenticated by Shaykh Ahmad Shaakiron on the authority of ‘Ali bin Abi Taalib  that the Prophet (peace be upon him), “asked for a pot containing Zamzam water and drank and performed ablution from it.” But they differed on using it for Istinjaa'. Some opined that it is allowed to use Zamzam for Istinjaa' without dislike, as it was reported by Imam An-Nawawi in his book Al-Majmoo' that Al-Maawardi mentioned that Istinjaa’ with the water of Zamzam is valid by the consensus of Muslim scholars.

However, many Muslim jurists considered it disliked to use the water of Zamzam in removing impurities, including Istinjaa’, yet they ruled that it is valid. The rationale behind considering it disliked is that the water of Zamzam is a blessed water. Ibn Al-Qayyim  said: “Zamzam water is the best and noblest of all waters, the highest in status, the dearest to people, and the most precious and priceless to them. It was dug by Jibreel and it quenched the thirst of Ismaa‘eel.”

Al-Allamah Al-Bahooti said in his book Kashshaaf Al-Qinaa': Only this (using Zamzam water to remove najaasah) is considered to be Makrooh, out of respect, but it is not makrooh to use it to purify oneself, because Ali said: The messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) departed from Muzdalifah and called for a bucket of Zamzam water. He drank from it, then did Wudoo'. Reported by Abd-Allah bin Ahmad with a saheeh isnaad.
