The Holy Quran is a highly Revered and Sacred Book of Allah SWT. It is the 4th and Final Heavenly Manuscript that was revealed to the Last Prophet, the holy Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) over the period of 23 years. It holds distinction in itself from all books of the world by being the only scripture that remains intact in its pristine form. Allah says:

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ

“Surely We revealed the Message, and We will surely preserve it.” (Al-Hijr:9)

The holy prophet was very keen in teaching his companions the recitation of the Qur’an as it was revealed and encouraged them towards reciting it properly, acting according to its laws and teaching it to others. They hence, became the bearers of the Qur’an, reciting it and studying at homes, in the markets, in their travels and their nights were filled with the recitation of the Qur’an. Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was teaching someone the Qur’an, the student made a mistake and he said to him: “that was not how the messenger of Allah taught it to me”. In realization of the smooth transmission of the best ways of studying the Qur’an, his holiness peace be upon him dispatched many of his best students of the Qur’an to many regions of the Islamic state to teach the Qur’an. They established Mosques and Qur’anic circles which many later became leading centers of learning and teaching the holy Qur’an.

There students who leant from them also continue the same routine of teaching the Qur’an from generation to generation. These first generations especially the first three hundred years are known as the age of the pious predecessors.

The ethical models of the pious predecessors (the salaf) in the learning and Teaching of the holy Qur’an serve as the parameters for a successful study of the Qur’an. They always ensure that all their actions are marked with sincerity and absence of show-off. They understood the prophetic principle that all actions are based on intentions and every one shall be judged according to their Intentions. Their learning and teaching of the Qur’an was for the sake of Allah Alone. The summary of other manners they were keen in upholding includes the following:

They always ensure that they keep a state of purity from spiritual uncleanliness and physical dirt. They teach and learn the glorious Qur’an in the state of purification and in ablution.

In teaching and learning the Qur’an, they ensure that the propelling force towards that is ignited by the wish to attain the rewards promised by Allah through such lofty act of worship and not any temporal material gain.

Both the teacher and the learner try to be the physical embodiment of the teachings of the Qur’an. The pious predecessors were always keen to observe the injunctions of the Qur’an. They exert their utmost to free their hearts of jealousy, envy, hatred and arrogance. The teacher among them jealous not the student for his excellence, nor does the students envy each other. They were all wishers of goodness to each other.

One of their models was to select a pure and clean place for the study of the Qur’an. Many of their circles of teaching and learning the Qur’an used to be conducted in the Mosques and other respectable places reserved for that purpose.

They were also keen in teaching and learning the Qur’an with Tarteel. Tarteel is reciting the Qur’an properly as it was revealed taking into consideration its letters, vowels and places of stopping and continuation in addition to pondering over its meanings.

The student and the teacher all begin the Qur’an with isti-aadha and Basmala and that is by saying: “ A’udhu Billahi Minash-Shaitaanir-Rajeem, Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem- (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan, and : “ In the Name of Allah; the Beneficent, The Merciful” ). this ensures ones protection from the accursed devil and ushers him into the state of commencing the studying of the Qur’an.

To Allah belongs all success and may His peace and salutations be upon the holy Prophet Muhammad, his family and all companions.
