SOME EFFECTS OF SINS ON A MUSLIM FAMILY

The consequences of the sins committed by the sinner may go beyond him to affect his family, as a punishment for him and a test for his family. Nevertheless, sins committed by people can even affect the whole society, a country or even the entire earth. This does not contradict with the basic Islamic teaching that no soul shall carry the burden of the other. This later issue is about the Day of Recompense, no one shall be put to torture in Hell because of the sins of others, but in this world, many things gets destroyed because of the handiwork of others. Allah says:

Corruption has appeared on land and sea, because of what people's hands have earned, in order to make them taste some of what they have done, so that they might return.” (Ar-Rum:41)

The family in the conceptualization of Islam is a very important unit of the community; housing people related by the same blood and headed by the father. A man is the caretaker of his family and shall be accounted for it. He is given the responsibility of ensuring the proper upbringing of his family by teaching them the laws of Allah, ensuring that they observe the Islamic injunctions. He does this by his own acts of obedience for his family to emulate. If he engages in actions of disobedience, his family follow suit in that direction. A person who smokes at home is likely to see his children or wife also smoking and this is true in all other instances of sins and immoral behaviors.

A man is charged by Islam to provide food and clothing for his family from lawful source. If these provisions are acquired through acts of disobedience such as cheating others, fraud, riba (usury or interest) it turns to pollute the entire family. Jaabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said:

"No meat (i.e. person) that was nourished with haraam  ( the unlawful) will enter paradise. Every meat (i.e. person) that was nourished with haraam is more deserving of the Fire." (Musnad Ahmad..).

Eating from unlawful source, and feeding ones family with it leads to the rejection of the dua (prayers) of the entire family. During the blessed days of the righteous predecessors (the sahaaba and those who followed them) when a man is leaving home for the market for trade, the wife addresses him saying: Oh man, brings us only lawful earnings. If you don’t get a lawful provision come home empty handed for surely we (she and her children) can bear the hunger and thirst of this world but we cannot bear the torture and heat of the hellfire. This is because people who do evil deeds, worship others besides Allah and have their family follow them in that shall all put to blame on the Day of Resurrection. Allah says:

“Gather those who did wrong, and their mates, and what they used to worship. Besides God, and lead them to the way to Hell.” (As-Saaffaat: 22-23)

The holy Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever purchases a garment by ten dirhams which contain a Haram dirham, Allah never accepts his prayer as long as he wears this garment.” (Ahmad)- Now imagined providing clothing for your family with unlawful earnings!!!!

Wuhaib Ibn Al-Ward said: “If you were to stand in Prayer equally as this column stands in the mosque, it would be of no avail until you take care about your livelihood, i.e., to verify what is lawful from what is Haram. (islamqa.info)

Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said,: Allah never accepts the Prayer of a man who feed on Haram until he repents.” (previous source)

Furthermore, sins lead to the deprivation of provisions and as the man is the caretaker of the family, this deprivation affects the entire family. In Musnad Ahmad it is narrated that Thawbaan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

A man is deprived of provision because of the sins that he commits.’”

Sins also lead to a sense of alienation between one and his wife and children. One of the salaf (righteous predecessors) said: “If I disobey Allaah, I see that in the attitude of my riding beast and my wife.” (previous source)

Committing sins and engaging in the disobedience of Allah creates many difficulties in one’s life such that he does not turn his attention towards any matter but he finds the way blocked or he finds it difficult. This at the long run affects the wellbeing of his family. Similarly, for the one who fears Allaah, things are made easy for him and his family.

وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ مَخْرَجًا

وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ ۚ

“And whoever fears God-He will make a way out for him. And will provide for him from where he never expected..” (At-Talaaq: 2-3)

May Allah guide us and our family to righteousness and piety and may His salutations and special benedictions be upon the holy Prophet Muhammad, his family, companions and upon all such who follow them in guidance until the Day of Judgment. Ameen.
