His grandfather Ismael was the owner of the well.. And the first who drank from it even though he did not dig it, but it was dug for his sake.

His grandfather Ismael was the first who came to Makkah from amongst the grandfathers of Abdul Muttalib..rather he was the first to dwell in Makkah..

When he arrived there, he was just a child that was carried.. he was a suckling baby.. but makkah was more childish.. it was an open land.. it walls were the mountains.. it was a valley with no tree, with no life.. with no people.. caravans pass by without stopping.. and the winds also blow without a stop..

But a company stops.. a pure company coming from a far distance.. going up and down on the tracks.. crossing empty lands.. crossing deserts and sands and passing through waves of a mirage.

A pure woman.. her name is Hajar.. was brought by her husband Al-Khalil(Ibrahim) peace be upon him.

Her husband Ibrahim brought her and her son Ismael when she was breastfeeding him and left them at the holy house (that was before it was built. Meaning at the place of the holy house-Al-Ka’abah), at the great tree on top of Zamzam by the highest part of the Mosque, and there was nobody in Makkah at that time, and there was no water, he left them there with a little bag containing some dates and a small jug of water.

Ibrahim then stood up and departed, Ismael’s mother followed him; she said: O Ibrahim, where are you going leaving us in this valley without a companion and without anything? She said that to him repeatedly but he did not turn to her.. and she said: Is Allah who ordered you to do this? He said: yes. She said: then, He will never neglect us. She then returned. Ibrahim continued until when he reached a place where they could not see him, he turned his face towards the holy house and supplicated with the following supplications, he raised his hands and said:

Which means: {Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your Sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make some people’s hearts incline towards them and provide them with fruits that they might be grateful}.(Qur’an 14:37).

Ismael’s mother continued to breastfeed her son while drinking the water she had, when the water finished she became thirsty and her son also, she looked at him twisting and kicking while crying, she got up hating to look at him in that mood, she saw that “Safa” (the hill from where the pilgrims begin the walking towards Marwah) was the nearest hill on earth to her and she went to it, then she faced the valley looking if she could see any person, but she did not see anyone. She went down until when she reached the bottom of the valley she raised her garment and walked like an urgent person, until she crossed the bottom of the valley and then went to “Marwah” (the second hill), stood on top of it and looked if she could see a person, she did not see anyone, she did that(i.e. walking between Safa and Marwah) seven times.

The Prophet(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

[‏‏فذلك سعي الناس بينها‏]. (‏رواه البخاري‏ برقم 1867 )

[This is the source of the tradition of the Sa'y ] i.e., the going of people between the two mountains. (Reported by Bukhari Book 19, Hadith 1867).

When she reached Al-Marwah (for the last time), she heard a voice and she exclaimed: 'Shshs!' (Silencing herself).. And behold! It was the angel at the place of Zamzam, digging the earth with his heel - or with his wing - till water flowed out. She started to gather the water, using her bare hands in this way.. and began to fill her water-skin with water using her bare hands, and the water was flowing out until she had scooped some of it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

[رحم الله أم إسماعيل لو تركت زمزم -أو قال‏:‏ لو لم تغرف من الماء، لكان زمزم عينا معينا]. (‏رواه البخاري‏ برقم 1867 ).

[May Allah bestow mercy on Ismael's mother! Had she let the Zamzam flow without trying to control it (or had she not scooped in that water) while filling her water-skin, Zamzam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth]. (Reported by Bukhari Book 19, Hadith 1867).

Then she drank and suckled her child. The angel said to her: Do not be afraid of being neglected, for there is a House of Allah in this site that will be built by this boy and his father, and Allah will never neglect His people.

Allah’s house(the Ka'bah) at that time was on a high place resembling a hillock, and when torrents came, they flowed to its right and left..

She continued living in that way till some people from the tribe of Jurhum passed by her and her child. They were coming from through the way of Kada', they based in the lower part of Makkah where they saw a bird flying. They said: This bird must be flying over water, though we know that there is no water in this valley. They sent one or two messengers who discovered the source of the water and returned to inform them of the water. So, they all came towards the water. While Ismael's mother was sitting near it. They said: will you allow us to stay with you? She replied: Yes, but you will have no right to possess the water. They agreed to that. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

[فألفى ذلك أم إسماعيل، وهي تحب الأنس، فنزلوا، فأرسلوا إلى أهليهم فنزلوا معهم، حتى إذا كانوا بها أهل أبيات منهم]. (‏رواه البخاري‏ برقم 1867).

[Ismael's mother was pleased with the whole situation as she used to love to be in the company of people. So, they settled there, and later they sent for their families who came and settled with them]. (Reported by Bukhari Book 19, Hadith 1867).

The child (i.e., Ismael) grew up and learned Arabic from them, they loved and admired him as he grew up, and when he reached the age of puberty, they gave him one of their daughters in marriage.

To be continued insha Allah…
