Upbringing and Social Control:

Society plays a huge role in molding individuals behavior, character and attitude. It determines how they see other people, their general outlook, and their ethics. Personality can't be formed apart from society.

The social values present in individuals are products of informal social control, exercised implicitly by a society through particular customs, norms, and traditions. Individuals internalize the values of their society, whether conscious or not of the indoctrination. Traditional society relies mostly on informal social control embedded in its customary culture to socialize its members.

The concept of social control from an Islamic viewpoint is more comprehensive than that of other non-Islamic views. Islam encourages social control, Allah Almighty says:

{You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.} (3:110)

From an Islamic perspective, the concept of social control requires compliance with Islamic norms, standards and values that aim to achieve the satisfaction of Allah Almighty. Then , as a result, it guarantees individuals and societies stability, prosperity, security and safety from deviation and disorder.

In light of this, Islamic education plays an important role in achieving social control; it gives greater attention to the individual than the society because the goodness and discipline of society is based primarily on the goodness of its members. Therefore, Islam has strengthened social ethics that would contribute to form the personality of a righteous Muslim individual in a manner consistent with lofty Islamic principles, from the etiquettes of eating and drinking, talking, visiting, expressing condolences and congratulations, to the etiquettes of dealing with others.

Islamic education encourages self-censorship which also in turn achieves social control, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said with regards to self-censorship:

[أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ].

[to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not achieve this state of devotion, then (take it for granted that) Allah sees you] (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 50).

Hence the role of the family, which is considered the most important institution of Islamic education and the most influential in individuals, has a special role and responsibility. It is the duty of educators to instill these Islamic virtues and ethics in children from early age through reflecting on lessons from the Quran, the Prophet's Hadith, and the biography of the righteous Companions and their followers. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

[كلكم راعٍ، وكلكم مسئول عن رعيته، والأمير راعٍ، والرجل راعٍ على أهل بيته؛ والمرأة راعية على بيت زوجها وولده، فكلكم راعٍ، وكلكم مسؤول عن رعيته].

[All of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects. The ruler is a guardian of his subjects, the man is a guardian of his family, the woman is a guardian and is responsible for her husband's house and his offspring; and so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects] (Sahih al-Bukhari , 5200).
