All praises are due to Allah; and may His peace and blessings be upon His messenger, his family and companions.

A mere inclination of the mind toward a people cannot be considered as love or attachment to them. But when it gets to the level of love and attachment, the scholars varied in the ruling guiding that depending on the cause. There is difference between loving someone for his characters, good qualities, generosity, kinship or for any other advantageous natural reason, and that love the love for someone because of his/her religion.

As for the fact that someone may be ignorant of the disbelief of the Christians and their like that is explicitly stated by texts and general consensus, though not good enough and even contemptible, does make such a person a disbeliever. This is based on the fact that he is given benefit of doubt as such evidences might have not gotten to him, especially if in a environment full of liars and general ignorance of the religion.

But as for the heretic, with sometimes differentiating between the scholars amongst them and lay followers, it is necessary not to generalize the proclamation of disbelief on them. There is need for detailed explanation to determine the kind of heresy and the person's condition.

Dr Ibrahim Ar-Ruhayli in his PhD dissertation said in "The statements of people and position of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah in the issue of declaring disbelief upon the people of heresies". He said the opinions are in three categories: two extremes and one moderate.

The first refutes proclaiming disbelief upon the people heresies in as much as they are Muslims.

The second declares all people of heresies generally to be disbelievers out of Islam.

However, the moderate view holds on to detailing on the issue. It says that the people of heresies are not of equal levels. Amongst them are those that there is no doubt about their disbelief like those who say or do what make(s) one to disbelieve and dies upon it without making efforts to put him aright. Such is ruled to be a disbeliever. While some others cannot be declared as disbelievers because the conditions for such declaration are not binding on them. This is the opinion of the generality of the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah.
