Thuwaiba (May Allah be please with her) was a bondswoman of Abu Lahab; the uncle of the Prophet (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When she brought the tidings of the birth of the Holy Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to her master, he at once set her free as an expression of his joy on this happy occasion and told her to nurse the newly born child. Thus, she was the first one to have the honor of feeding the Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet liked her so much and was grateful to her and her children until she died in the seventh year A.H (after Hijra).

In Sahih Bukhari, it was narrated on the authority of Urwa that “…. When Abu Lahb died, one of his relatives saw him in a dream in a very bad state and asked him, "What have you encountered?" Abu Lahb said, "I have not found any rest since I left you, except that I have been given water to drink in this (the space between his thumb and other fingers) and that is because of my manumitting Thuwaiba." (Book of wedlock)

About Thuwaiba, some authorities expressed that she had embraced Islam and died after the Prophet’s migration to Medina

When our Prophet (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in Makkah, He visited Thuwaiba (may Allah be pleased with her), inquired after her health and helped her. After the Prophet migrated to Madinah, he continued his care for her and sent clothes to her. Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) wanted to set this woman free by buying her from Abu Lahab but he did not want to sell her at first, and he himself set her free afterwards. (Tabaqat, 1/108)

When our Prophet (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned from the battle of Khyber, she had passed away. Her son, Masruh, died before his mother.
