Prayer Time

Qutaylah bint ʻAbdu l-ʻUzzá  was the first wife of Abu Bakr. She was a member of the Amir ibn Luayy clan of the Quraysh in Mecca.  Her marriage to Abu Bakr Siddeeq produced two children, Asmā' and Abdullah. Qutaylah was a polytheist. She was divorced from Abubakar Siddeeq in Pre-Islamic times with two children as named above.

Seven years after their daughter Asmā' had migrated from Mecca, Qutaylah came to visit her in Medina. She brought gifts of raisins, clarified butter and qaraz (pods of a species of the sant tree). However, Asmā' did not admit her mother into her house or accept the gifts until she had sent someone to Aisha to ask Muhammad about what her attitude to her unbelieving mother should be. He replied that she should certainly admit her to her house and accept the gifts.

This was the occasion for the revealing of Allah of the following verse of the Qur'an:

As for those who have not fought against you for your religion, nor expelled you from your homes, God does not prohibit you from dealing with them kindly and equitably. God loves the equitable. But God prohibits you from befriending those who fought against you over your religion, and expelled you from your homes, and aided in your expulsion. Whoever takes them for friends-these are the wrongdoers.” (Al-Mumtahana:8-9)

Her Islam.

Her Islam is a matter of controversy among Muslim scholars and historians. Majority opined that there was nothing showing her Islam whilst a few others claim that she embraced Islam and migrated to Madina. Ibn Hajar mentioned, had she being a Muslim, her daughter; Asmaa’ bint Abubakar (may Allah be pleased with them) wouldn’t have asked the Prophet’s-peace be upon him- permission to admit her into her house (Al-Isaaba:pp:1752)

Imam An-Nawawi said about her in his commentary of Sahih Muslim: “ the scholars differed about her Islam, with the majority of scholars opining that she died as a polytheist.” ( Sharh Sahih Muslim-Kitaabu Az-Zakaat)

Allah knows best.
