All praises and thanks are due and belong to Allah, and may His peace and blessings be upon the holy Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

The glorious Qur’an is the timeless Speech of Allah, and not a created thing. It is the study guide for life, death, and what follows. It is the book of guidance and mercy to the World. Its excellence and virtues are outstanding, no words has ever described it better than how it described itself and how it was described by the one to whom it was revealed to; the lofty Messenger of Allah peace be upon him. Allah says about the Qur’an:

إِنَّ هَٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ يَهْدِى لِلَّتِى هِىَ أَقْوَمُ وَيُبَشِّرُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا كَبِيرًا

“This Qur'an guides to what is most upright; and it gives good news to the believers who do good deeds, that they will have a great reward.” (Al-Israa:9)

The Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said about the excellence of the Qur’an:

“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will receive one good deed as ten good deeds like it. I do not say that alif-lam-meem is one letter, but rather alif is a letter, lam is a letter, and meem is a letter. (At-Tirmidhi, Grade: Sahih).

Thus, there are enough proofs in the glorious Qur’an itself that describe its excellence besides the many authentic sayings of the holy Prophet peace be upon him on the same subject. Nevertheless , there are many traditions (Ahaadith) that were fabricated about the virtues of various chapters of the Quran. Their fabricators’ intention was to encourage people to read Quran and devote themselves to that, and they claimed that they were doing good thereby. But their intentions were misguided because that is undoubtedly subject to the stern warning contained in the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

“Whoever tells a lie about me deliberately, let him take his place in Hell.” (al-Bukhaari Muslim,) .

It makes no difference whether the lie is intended for good or for evil.

Among such fabricated hadiths on the excellence of the glorious Qur’an are as follows:

It was narrated from Zirr ibn Hubaysh from Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited the Qur’aan to me twice during the year in which he died, and said: “Jibreel (peace be upon him) told me to recite the Qur’aan to you, and he sends greetings of salaam to you.” Ubayy said: I said when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited to me: “It is as if it was just for me; did you single me out for the reward of Qur’aan because of what Allaah told you?” He said: “Yes, O Ubayy. Any Muslim who recites the Opening of the Book (al-Faatihah) will be given as much reward as if he recited two-thirds of the Qur’aan, and he will be given reward as if he had given charity to every believer, man and woman… and whoever recites Soorat al-Muzzammil will be relieved of hardship in this world and in the Hereafter.”

Ibn al-Jawzi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: And he mentioned a reward for every soorah until the end of the Qur’aan… this hadeeth about the virtues of the soorahs is undoubtedly fabricated. Al-Mawdoo’aat, 1/391.

Al-Shawkaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This was narrated by al-‘Aqeeli from Ubayy ibn Ka’b in a marfoo’ report. Ibn al-Mubaarak said: I think that the Zanaadiqah fabricated it. (Al-Fawaa’id al-Majmoo’ah fi Ahaadeeth al-Mawdoo’ah, p. 264 )

The hadeeth has several isnaads (chain narrations) all of which are false and fabricated.

Another fabricated hadith is that narrated in Kanz al-‘Ummaal (9/465), on the authority of Muqaatil ibn Sulaymaan: Fadl ibn ‘Ubayd told us, from Sufyaan ath-Thawri, from ‘Ubaydullah al-‘Umari, from Naafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar, and attributed to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him): “Whoever recites Aayat al-Kursiy after doing wudoo’, Allah will give him the reward of forty scholars, and raise him forty degrees in status, and give him in marriage forty of al-hoor al-‘iyn.” This is a fabricated isnaad. Muqaatil ibn Sulaymaan was a well-known liar. An-Nasaa’i said: The liars who were well known for fabricating hadith were: Ibn Abi Yahya in Madinah, al-Waaqidi in Baghdad, Muqaatil ibn Sulaymaan in Khurasaan, and Muhammad ibn Sa‘eed in Syria.

Due to the dangers of fabricated hadiths and their impacts, the scholars have authored many books on fabricated hadiths in which they detailedly discussed why such hadiths were never authentic of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. among such books are:

1-Tadhkiratul-Mawduu’aat by : Al-Hafith Muhammad Ibn Taahir Al-Maqdisi (died: 507 A.H)

2-Al-Mawduu’aat by Ibn Jawzi (died: 597A.H) it is regarded as the one of the most comprehensive books on the subject.

3-Al-Fawa’id… by Shawkaani (1255 A.H). in this book, Imam Shawkaani provided the biography of the liars known for fabricating of hadiths and relating them to the holy Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.
