Enemies of Islam claim that Islam calls for hatred of others, and considers hostility of others one of the Islamic principles, which - in their view - contradicts the idea of being a religion of tolerance and love, doubts the real purpose of Jihad (i.e. guiding people to Islam).

Indeed this claim is a part of the truth, not the whole truth. Hatred and antagonism of Kufar (infidels) are originally one of  Sharia's fundamentals and of the most important bonds of faith;  This is proven in many texts of the Qur'an and Sunnah, Allah Almighty says:

{ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا عَدُوِّي وَعَدُوَّكُمْ أَوْلِيَاءَ تُلْقُونَ إِلَيْهِمْ بِالْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا بِمَا جَاءَكُمْ مِنَ الْحَقِّ } (الممتحنة:1)

Interpretation of the meaning:

{O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth} (60:1).

However, in order to clarify the whole truth regarding this matter, the following must be noted:

Firstly, Islam is based on justice and gives everyone his right. It calls for justice in all matters, even heart feelings must be fair. That is to say, is it fair to love those who disbelieve in Allah,  His Messenger,  and His book and religion? Is it fair to give our love to those violating the Islamic sanctities and laws, and claiming that the best of all human beings, Muhammad peace be upon him, is a liar? Is it fair to equal between believers and infidels in terms of love?

Secondly, Islam aims to strip human feelings of personal preferences. Love and hatred must be for the sake of Allah. We must love the righteous as they deserve, and hate enemies of Allah as they deserve, or else we cannot claim the love of Allah while we love his enemies! Allah Almighty says:

{لَا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ} (المجادلة: 22)

{You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred} (58:22).

Thirdly, hatred of disbelievers doesn't involve wishing them evil or Allah's punishment, on the contrary, as we have feelings of hatred towards them, we wish them good and guidance. If they repent to Allah and accept the religion of Islam, they become our brothers in Islam who deserve our love, affection, and loyalty.

Fourthly, This hatred and hostility are never considered as a justification for the injustice of infidels and digestion of their rights, rather we have been enjoined by justice.

{وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى} (المائدة: 8)

{and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness} (5:8).

Fifthly,  Islam does not forbid the Muslim to uphold ties, return favors and be fair and kind towards the infidels and Mushrikeen (polytheists), whether they are relatives or not, so long as they are not in a state of war with Muslims. Indeed, this may soften their hearts towards Islam.

 {لا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُمْ مِنْ دِيَارِكُمْ أَنْ تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوا إِلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ}(الممتحنة:8).

{Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly} (60:8)

It was, therefore, important to consider the issue from all angles, so that one can see justice, mercy, and perfection of the Islamic law.

We ask Allah for His Love, the love of those who love Him, and deeds which will cause us to attain His Love.
