Respecting Others in Islam:

Respect is always an important issue in human life, especially in Islam. Islam states that it is the responsibility of each individual to treat all creations with respect, honor and dignity.

Respect includes loving for others what we love for ourselves.  Respect also involves treating others the way we expect to be treated with compassion, love and mercy. This is an essential part of being a believer; the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

[No one of you becomes a true believer until he likes for his brother what he likes for himself].

From this regard, respect is required in all manners and high standards emphasizing respect towards others in Islam, regardless of their differences of  age, sex, religion and race,  such as the etiquette of visiting, asking permission, as well as speaking to people in a good manner. Allah Almighty says:

{And speak to people good [words]} (Qur’an 2:83).

On the other hand, Islam forbids any act that shows a lack of respect towards others, such as searching for other people's faults or making fun of them, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

[O you who have accepted Islam with his tongue, while faith has not reached his heart! Do not harm the Muslims, nor revile them, nor spy on them to expose their secrets. For indeed whoever tries to expose his Muslims brother’s secrets, Allah exposes his secrets wide open, even if it is in the depth of his house] (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2032).

Islam also forbids suspicion, backbiting and gossip because that bring about nothing but controversy and disconnection. Allah Almighty says:

Interpretation: {O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then they are those who are the wrongdoers * O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumptions are sinful. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful} (Qur’an 49: 11-12).

O Allah, guide us to the best of deeds and the best of manners, for none can guide to the best of them but You. And protect us from bad deeds and bad manners, for none can protect against them but You.
