Islam means and represents Peace!.(Corrected one).

Some of present day media paints the image of Islam negatively. They have unrepentantly waged a war of deformation against the image of Islam, basically because of the actions of a few Muslims; who might not be knowledgeable, or might have acquired misguided knowledge about Islam. They do without a recourse to know the true teachings of the religion via its holy book,  the Qur'an and its interpretations, the traditions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and their interpretations, and other sources of Islamic law and jurisprudence.

Reflecting back to history, we find out that the pre-Islamic era of Arabia or what is referred to in Islamic history as the era of Jahiliyyah (the period of ignorance) and the entire world then, was full of sorts of barbarism, oppression and atrocities perpetrated by the rich in the society against the poor, the strong against the weak, men against women and so on. There was the prevalence of intolerance, vindictiveness and selfishness just like the shylock-like "must have his pound of flesh"! Wars were fought for the most trivial reason, to pardon meant weakness, to keep a female child meant disgrace, most if not all virtues were turned upside down.

In such a world came Islam. The religion of peace that truly ushered in peace into the world. Its name is peace. Its greeting and way of salutation is peace. Its message is live in peace among yourselves and with your Lord and Creator.

Islam has always encouraged its followers to take to the path of peace all the time; to forgive and repay bad with good, the unpleasant with the pleasant and a bad word with a good one. Allah says in the Qur’an:

{And not alike are the good and the evil. Repel (evil) with what is best, when lo! he between whom and you was enmity would be as if he were a warm friend}. (Qur'an41:34).

And He the Almighty in the next verse in the same chapter commended those believers who are able to inculcate and exhibit such characters by saying:

{And none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except those who have great fortune}. (Qur'an41:35).

He commended the patient ones and rebuked the inpatient. And that is why He stated: {And none is granted it except those who are patient…}. So, patience is good fortune for those who possess it. He, the exalted says in the Qur’an:

{And the servants of the Beneficent Allah are those  who walk on the earth in humbleness, and when the ignorant address them, they say: Peace} (Qur'an25:63).

He the Almighty also says:

{And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing}. (Qur'an41:36).

Any sort of evil suggestions be it to oppress others, backbite and slander someone, or to blaspheme and cause any sort of pain to others, as Muslims we are to repel that evil thought from shaytan (Satan) by seeking refuge in Allah. These are the teachings of Islam. These are the core components of the Message of Islam. These and a lot of other virtues in peace-loving are what Muhammad (peace be upon him) practiced and taught to his companions (may Allah be pleased with them all).

There are lot of stories and instances in his history (peace be upon him), where he forgave, pardoned and helped intercede for others to allow the rein of peace and avoid rancor. He had never in his life sort for vengeance for the injustices meted against his person, but will readily come forth to protect the rights and the religion of his Lord, Allah.

When he conquered Makkah, the unbelievers thought it would be the end for them, looking back to all the atrocities they had committed against his person, family and companions. But he asked: [what do you think I am going to do with you today?], he asked them, and they replied, with their hearts in their mouth out of fear; "You are a generous brother and the son of a generous brother.'' And then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to them: [I will only say to you what my brother Yusuf (peace be upon him said to his brothers; " "No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful". Go, and you are all free]. (See: As-sunan-l-Kubra, An-nasaai, 10/154, Sharhu Maani-l-Aathar, At-tahaawi, 3/325, and Akhbaar Makkah, Al-Azraqi, 2/121).

That is the person of Muhammad. That is the message he taught in Islam; to forgive and pardon, help the poor and needy, give out charity and  be kind to your neighbor; whether they are Muslims or not, generosity, humility and so on and so forth. But, unfortunately, some of the modern media has turned it all upside down for Muslims and Islam. An average Muslim is a potential terrorist and Islam is terrorism!!!

There are a thousand and one verses in the Qur'an that contain the word (salam), i.e. peace, and its connotations. Below are a few of them:

{O you who have believed! enter into the submission completely and do not follow the footsteps of Shaitan; surely he is your open enemy} (Qur'an 2:208).

The word "al-silm" meaning peace was used by Allah to refer to Islam. Allah says:

{And if they incline to peace, then incline to it and trust in Allah; surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing} (Qur'an8:61).

The greeting and way of salutation in Islam is: "Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you". And that will be the same greetings with which we shall salute our Lord on the Day of Resurrection. Allah says:

{Their greetings  on the day that they meet Him shall be, Peace, and He has prepared for them an honorable reward}. (Qur'an33:44).

And when it comes to da’awah (advocacy), i.e. the call to the path of Allah and preaching the message of Islam, the religion says it has to be in the best possible of manners, with wisdom, politeness and curtsey. Allah says:

{Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the best manner; surely your Lord best knows those who go astray from His path, and He knows best those who follow the right way}. (Qur'an16:125).

For those who do not know these about Islam before, get a copy of the translated Qur'an, read through it and therein, by the special grace of Allah you will attain peace in your life.
