Implications of the Beautiful names and attributes: The All-Wise, The Omnipotent, The Omniscient

Amongst the beautiful names of Allah are ninety-nine names and attributes mentioned in the Qur'an and sunnah, widely referred to as the Ninety-nine Names of Allah. Mind you, Allah's names and attributes are innumerable and are not restricted to the prominent  ninety-nine mentioned. Among these prominent names and attributes of Allah are: Al-'Aleem (The Omniscient), Al-Hakeem (The All-Wise) and Al-Mateen (The Omnipotent). The following is a brief write-up on these three attributes of Allah.

THE OMNISCIENT (AL-‘ALEEM )

This means that Allah  is conversant with everything; He comprehends all things in His Knowledge: the hidden and the evident, the slightest and the most awesome, the first and the last; He knows the ins and outs of everything.

 وَمَا تَكُونُ فِي شَأْنٍ وَمَا تَتْلُو مِنْهُ مِنْ قُرْآَنٍ وَلَا تَعْمَلُونَ مِنْ عَمَلٍ إِلَّا كُنَّا عَلَيْكُمْ شُهُودًا إِذْ تُفِيضُونَ فِيهِ وَمَا يَعْزُبُ عَنْ رَبِّكَ مِنْ مِثْقَالِ ذَرَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَلَا أَصْغَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَلَا أَكْبَرَ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ (61)

Which can be translated as:

Whatever you (O Muhammad) may be doing, and whatever portion you may be reciting from the Qur'an, - and whatever deed you (mankind) may be doing (good or evil), We are Witness thereof, when you are doing it. And nothing is hidden from your Lord (so much as) the weight of an atom (or small ant) on the earth or in the heaven. Not what is less than that or what is greater than that but is (written) in a Clear Record (Q10:61)

وَعِنْدَهُ مَفَاتِحُ الْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا هُوَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ وَمَا تَسْقُطُ مِنْ وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا يَعْلَمُهَا وَلَا حَبَّةٍ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ الْأَرْضِ وَلَا رَطْبٍ وَلَا يَابِسٍ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ (59)

Which can be translated as:

"And with Him are the keys of the Ghaib (all that is hidden), none knows them but He. And He knows whatever there is in (or on) the earth and in the sea; not a leaf falls, but he knows it. There is not a grain in the darkness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry, but is written in a Clear Record" (Q6:59)

The comprehensiveness and clarity of His all-inclusive Knowledge cannot be perfectly estimated or comprehended by the human mentality due to its limited capacities and capabilities..

Allah, Praise and Glory be to Him, is the OMNISCIENT since eternity; He knows everything about His names, His Attributes and His Divine Acts since the beginning of creation and about all the living beings that will be created till Doomsday. Allah’s Omniscient Power differs from the knowledge of His creatures in the following aspects:

- Allah’s Knowledge is infinite and vast.

- His Knowledge coincides and is in perfect conformity with the true nature of the acknowledged.

- His Omniscient Knowledge precedes the existence of the acknowledged, and is not acquired through the existence of things, but all things acquire existence through His Knowledge.

- His Omniscient Knowledge is prone neither to variation nor alteration; It is neither increased by information nor decreased by forgetfulness.

He is the OMNISCIENT Who knows everything about Himself and His Attributes eternally and permanently. This Omniscient Power is one of the epithets that are related to His Exalted Self like the Divine Will, that originated events in their eligible time and in accordance with the eternal Omniscient Power that had preordained everything. Glory be to the OMNISCIENT, Praise and Glory be to Him, He is Allah.

The ALL-WISE (AL-HAKEEM)

The wise is the one who has wisdom, and wisdom is the best knowledge of the best of sciences. Wisdom also denotes  sound management of things and supreme skill. Allah, the ALL-WISE is the Master of absolute wisdom and knowledge; He, Praise and Glory be to Him, knows the most exalted things of the holiest sciences; for He knows His Exalted Self, His Attributes and His Most Beautiful Names.

His Knowledge is permanent, nothing can ever blemish or escape His all-embracing Knowledge that is void of any doubts. As for the well-management and the mastery over all things, Allah, Praise and Glory be to Him, says,

الَّذِي أَحْسَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ وَبَدَأَ خَلْقَ الْإِنْسَانِ مِنْ طِينٍ (7)

Which can be translated as:

 “He Who has made everything which He has created most Good” (Q32: 7).

...صُنْعَ اللَّهِ الَّذِي أَتْقَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ إِنَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَفْعَلُونَ (88)

Which can be translated as:

“…Such is the artistry of God Who disposes of all things in perfect order.” (Q27:88).

...فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ (14)

 Which can be translated as:

 “So blessed be God, the Best of creators!” (Q23:14).

 

The OMNIPOTENT (AL-MATEEN)

AL-MATEEN is derived from the root word matanayamtunu which means being firm, unchangeable and fixed. Allah is the One Who has perfect and unconquerable Power; no one objects to His Actions, or prevents His Orders from being carried out. Omnipotence denotes extreme power, the Almighty must be omnipotent, He described himself in the Qur’an and said,

 إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ (58)

Which can be translated as:

"Verily, Allah is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong." (Q51:58), and He threatened the unbelievers by saying,

وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ (183)

Which can be translated as:

“Respite will I grant unto them; for My scheme is strong and unfailing” (Q7:183), which means that His Scheme is unconquerable.

The OMNIPOTENT is He Whose overwhelming power is insurmountable and inaccessible. The OMNIPOTENT is not perfectly known save by Him. Glory be to Him, He is Allah.
