All praises and thanks belong to Allah and may His salutations and blessings be upon the leader of the Prophets and the last of the Messengers; the holy Prophet of Islam, his family and all companions.

The Qur’an is the word of Almighty in entirety which was revealed through the arc-angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The revelation of the Qur’an occurred over a period of 23 years with the revelation of some chapters and verses traced back to the Makkah period and others to the Madina period. The Qur’an was revealed in the perspicuous Arabic language and still remains intact in its pristine form in this language, even though there are translations to other major languages of the world, the Glorious Qur’an still maintains its original text.

In the history of Islam, in every century, there are almost thousands and millions of Muslims who commit the entire Qur’an into memory word for word as it was first revealed by angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) to Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) without even the slightest error, change or alteration in anything of the Qur’an. This is because, the memorization and protection of the Qur’an is a lofty act of worship which Muslims are encouraged to compete one another towards. All the divine scriptures sent to different prophets and messengers before suffered major changes, alterations, interpolations, additions and subtractions except the Glorious Qur’an. This is undisputable claim that has won a scholarly and historical consensus by men of these disciplines. In his book “Towards Understanding Islam”, H.G.Dorman says about the Qur’an:

“It (the Qur’an) is literal revelation of God, dictated to Muhammad by Gabriel, perfect in every letter. It is an ever-present miracle witnessing to itself and Muhammad, the prophet of God. Its miraculous quality resides partly in its style, so perfect and lofty that neither man nor Jinn could produce a single chapter to compare with its briefest chapter, and partly in its content of teaching prophecies about the future and amazingly accurate information such as the unlettered Muhammad could never have gathered of his own”.

Memorization is discussed here as a paramount method through which the Qur’an was protected because it was the popular method of protecting important information and events even though other methods such as writing on stones, skin of animals etc were used to get the Glorious Qur’an protected and preserved. Michael Zwettler in his book{ The Oral Tradition of Classical Arabic Poetry, Ohio State Press, 1978, p.14”} notes that "in ancient times, when writing was scarcely used, memory and oral transmission was exercised and strengthened to a degree now almost unknown". Large portions of the revelation were thus easily memorized by a large number of people in the community of the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
