Decisiveness in Islam and Judaism

All lofty praises and thanks are due to Allah , and may His blessings and salutations be upon Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Decisiveness is the capability of taking the responsibility of a decision. It leads to taking a decision at the right time in appropriate situations immediately. Undoubtedly, this is a praiseworthy act and a religious recommendation in both Islam and Judaism.

Hesitation and irresolution, which are the opposite of decisiveness, are dispraised qualities especially in times that deserve determinations. The Prophet of Islam (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was commanded by Allah to act with decisiveness and determination without giving in to hesitation if he arrived at a conclusive decision after consultation with his companions, Allah says:

وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ ۖ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ

“…and consult them in the conduct of affairs. And when you make a decision, put your trust in God; God loves the trusting.” (Aali-Imraan: 159)

Thus, when you make a decision put trust in Allah and go ahead in the execution of your decision without hesitation.

Decisiveness is the characteristic of a productive Muslim – because only by making effective decisions will you be moving forward in your life. The more you linger, and let the devil play with your mind, the more you will be slowed down and become unproductive.

Indecisiveness makes one to flow according to the dictate of the events and circumstances of life just like the swimmer who does not know where he is swimming. He swims according to the flow of the waves of the ocean.

The bible regarded indecisiveness as an act of doubled mindedness and condemned people who are characterized with it. In  James 1: 6-8, it reads:

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.  For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;  he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

Prophet Musa (Moses) just like all other Prophets of Allah (peace be upon them and our beloeved Prophet Muhammad), was an example of determination and decisiveness. He was tested in many ways under the rebellion of Pharoah and his minister Haaman, but yet remained steadfast in doing the work of his Lord; Allah Almighty until he was granted victory over his opponents and liberated the children of Israel from their state of subordination to the rule of Pharaoh

Decisiveness with regards to leaders of all kinds should be inseparable character. Many leaders fail simply because they refuse to be decisive. Some insist on more and more information. They fail as they experience analysis paralysis. Others will not make a decision because they fear failure. Ironically, they experience the failure they feared because of their failure to make a decision. It is due to this we are taught in Islam how to back our decisions with divine choice and selection through the prayer of istikhara ( prayer of seeking Allah decision) so as not to spend so  many days, months and years hoping to hit the right decisions.
