Glory and praises are due and belong to Allah Who created and made preferences among His creation. may His mercy, peace, benedictions and choicest salutations be upon the last Prophet and Messenger who led all other Messengers and Prophets in the Aqsa Mosque in his night journey into the heaven. May Allah’s peace be upon him, his family and all companions.

Al Masjid Al Aqsa has a very special place in the hearts of the entire Muslim community due to its unique and rich history as a place of worship that is so closely intertwined with the lives of many of the Prophets of Islam, as well as for its special status as a Masjid to which travel is recommended and in which reward is increased.

Al Masjid Al Aqsa was the first qibla in Islam and it has been a significant and important place of worship for the Prophets of Islam. It was built 40 years after Al Masjid Al Haram in Makkah.

It was the place of ascension of the Prophet of Islam into the heaven during his night journey of Israa and Mi’raj, hence, the Masjid Al Aqsa had a very unique place in the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for this reason. He and his companions prayed towards it in the early days of islam until his qibla was changed towards the holy house of Ka’aba in the sacred land of Makkah, hence, Masjid Al-Aqsa was the first qibla of Muslims.

Masjid Al-Aqsa is the third most sanctified sanctuaries of the Muslims after the Masjid al-Haram and the Masjid An-Nabawy in the holy city of Al-Madina. A prayer in it worth more rewards than any other Mosque in the world except the Masjid Al-Haram and the Masjid An-Nabawy in Makkah and Madina respectively. Above all these, it was mentioned in the Qur’an in such a magnificent manner that, it left memories of holiness in the hearts of the believers. The holy Qur’an declared:

Glory to Him who journeyed His servant by night, from the Sacred Mosque, to the Farthest Mosque, whose precincts We have blessed, in order to show him of Our wonders. He is the Listener, the Beholder.”( Al-Israa:1)

The relinquishment of the custodianship of the Aqsa Mosque by the Muslims was a prophesy mentioned by the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and achieved by the Just and God-fearing leader of the then ruler of the Muslim world; the Ameerul-Mu’mineen Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). This grand relinquishment of the custody of the Aqsa Mosque by the humble caliph witnessed one of the bloodless victories in the history of the world. The treaty pact signed by the caliph Umar on behalf of the non-Muslim inhabitants of the Aqsa Mosque led to the multitude of its non-Muslims neighbors embracing Islam in flocks, and since then the Aqsa and its environ became one of the most important centers of Islam. Until today, Muslims all over the globe still revere the Aqsa Mosque and regard it as one of their holy sites.
