How to be honest with Allah

Honesty with Allah is among the signs of faith and one’s recognition of Allah’s rights over him. faith in Allah is not a mere wishful concept, rather, it is about one’s heart being condensed in certainty (Yaqeen) demonstrated through obedience to Allah and following the sunnah (Tradition) of His messenger peace be upon him, hence, honesty with Allah is by obeying His commandments publicly and secretly. Allah says:

Righteousness does not consist of turning your faces towards the East and the West. But righteous is he who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the prophets. Who gives money, though dear, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the homeless, and the beggars, and for the freeing of slaves; those who perform the prayers, and pay the obligatory charity, and fulfill their promise when they promise, and patiently persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and in the time of conflict. These are the sincere; these are the pious.”(Al-Baqara:177)

To observe honesty with Allah, one has observe the following among other things:

1-one has to be true to the covenant and pledges between one and Allah. This is done by abstaining from associating partners with Allah, not committing the major sins intentionally, repenting to Allah and adhering to all His injunctions. Allah says:

“Of the believers are men who are true to what they pledged to God. Some of them have fulfilled their vows; and some are still waiting, and never wavering.” (Al-Ahzaab:23).

Thus being honest with what one pledged with Allah is one of the signs of a servant’s honesty with Allah.

2-sincerity of intention. Being sincere in ones acts of worship and other endeavors’ relating whether to this world or the hereafter is among the Ways of being honest with Allah. For instance, in struggling against the infidels (jihad), which is regarded as the peak of Islam, it is one who is honest in his quest for martyrdom that is regarded as a martyr. As for those who fight to gain fame or to be regarded as heroes or warriors, they lose the honor of being martyrs in the sight of Allah. The holy Prophet –peace be upon him-said: “whoever ask Allah martyrdom and is honest in his request, Allah gives him the status of martyrs even if he dies on his bed

3- Another way of being honest with Allah is to believe what He mentioned of the unseen; such paradise, Hell, the Throne, the angels and so on and working honestly with regards to that. One cannot be honest with Allah whilst rejecting the ordeal of the Day of accountability, where people shall receive the rewards of their deeds.

To be honest with Allah , one need to submit his will to the divine wisdom of Allah with the strong conviction that whatever Allah does contains some wisdom and benefits to His servants.
